In every sport I have ever played, running was always the punishment. Scream too many times on the bus? Get on the line and sprint. Do something stupid in a game? Get on the line and sprint.

I feel like running has been instilled in so many people as a negative thing. ITS NOT! Running is awesome. Some people love it and some people hate it, but I think most people don’t give running a fair chance.

When you first start out it’s hard. It probably makes muscles you didn’t know you had hurt, it makes you not be able to breathe, it’s uncomfortable. But, what did you expect? As with anything new, you need to get used to it. Don’t give up on it without giving it a fair chance.

Another misconception people have is they think they should be able to just go out and run. NOPE. It takes time.

-When you first start out, start with mostly walking. Walk for 2 minutes, run for 30 seconds and continue to do this for 20 minutes. Eventually increase the amount of time running instead of walking and before you know it, you will be able to run for 20 minutes straight.

-Don’t expect to be Speedy Gonzalez right away. If it takes you 13 minutes to run a mile, who cares!? You still ran an entire mile. I have been running and training for 6 years and I am just starting to feel like I am getting “fast”, what ever fast means. DONT STOP TRYING THOUGH. I read a quote a while ago that I am pretty much obsessed with because I feel like it applies to me 100%.

I work my ass off. I try my hardest all the time. Am I the fastest person in races? Nope. Am I the strongest person in crossfit? Not at all. But do I know I am one of the hardest workers out there? Ohhhhh FOR SURE! And I take pride in that, in how hard I bust my ass. And eventually, like in my last race, I start seeing results.

-Do your research. There are so many articles out there on how to run, how to start, and how to get better at running. Take advantage of them!

You won’t know until you try, and trying doesn’t mean one run. It means giving it a fair shot. It means putting in the time and effort. It means a few weeks, a few runs. Do me a favor, JUST TRY!

Need some motivation?

Make it a great day

Hi folks! Seems like this post will be a little all over the place, so good luck keeping up! ūüėČ

First off, thanks for all of the encouraging words about changing my eating habits. ¬†I haven’t done anything drastic¬†yet but when I do I will be sure to share.

-So, I have been keeping up with my streaking. ¬†I am freaking READY for July 4th to come and have a day off. ¬†A full, complete, 100% rest my legs, day off. ¬†Don’t get me wrong, I love love love running, but my legs are tired. ¬†Especially with all the¬†ass kicking i do heavy lifting at CrossFit. ¬†I need a rest. ¬†BUT, until then… I’ll keep running! And big props to those of you keeping up the streaking (shout out to Bekah Boo Boo)!!!! ¬†Almost there!!!! ¬†KEEP RUNNING!

-Last night my friend and I met up at the local track for another Yasso workout. ¬†Honestly…. I didn’t hate it! ¬†We did 6 800’s. ¬†I was conscious of my times and made sure to have negative splits for every 800 (meaning the second lap faster than the first). ¬†I finished all under 3:20 and was super pleased that I didn’t feel like death at the end. ¬†Had it not been for a super sore quad, I would have even pushed for 1 more 800. Who am I?!

-This morning I woke up and instantly did not want to run. ¬†To be honest,¬†I tried to cancel. ¬†But, sleepyhead didn’t respond on time so I got dressed and headed to run. ¬†I set out with plans on running ¬†2 miles. ¬†I got out there and it was the perfect temperature, my legs were tired but not dead and I was realllly enjoying it. ¬†A little over 5 miles later and I was happy as can be. ¬†Seriously, running first thing in the morning¬†outside is the best way for me to start my day. I am happy and most likely more pleasant to be around all day. ¬†Morning running outside is hands down my¬†favorite thing in the whole world.

-On Friday I am going to see my boyfriend, Dave, at Hershey with momma bear and this girl. ¬†I can’t explain how happy I am. ¬†We all know I love concerts, especially Dave Matthews Band.

Thanks BLB for this shot ūüôā

In preparation for Friday I am oh so obnoxiously walking around with headphones blaring all the DMB I can find. ¬†Between my run this morning and this music, I am painfully happy. yes, thats a real thing…. so happy it hurts.

-I am getting worse at remembering to take pictures. ¬†I swear I will get better, or at least¬†try. ¬†That’s fair!

-Oh andddd Jbone and I still working on making our new house perfect so we aren’t in yet. ¬†soon though! ¬†and I can’t.freakin.wait!

Hope you have a fantastical day!  Make it a great one!

Food Matters

I am a vegetarian.  I have been for a little over 2 and a half years.

When I did eat meat I rarely ate red meat, never ate pork and stuck with mostly chicken and turkey. ¬†Then one day I watched the documentary Food Inc. ¬†I saw some incredibly disturbing things and was completely turned off by meat and most animal products. ¬†I even stopped eating eggs for a long time. ¬†I am not opposed to others eating meat, and I will even cook it from time to time, it’s just my own personal choice to not eat it.

Lately I have been feeling… off. ¬† I don’t know exactly what it is… boredom, curiosity, lacking nutrients? ¬†something is going on.

I am tired of feeling like I am not eating an actual meal.   A girl can only eat so much yogurt, cottage cheese, pb&j and boring salads.  When I do feel like I have had a meal it usually consists of fries and a veggie burger.  Not the healthiest choice.

I am curious about what will happen to my body when I eat meat.  Lean protein. Will I feel tired and worn down from having that dense substance in my digestive system?  Or will it make me feel fuller longer therefore I will eat fewer calories and start to get leaner.  Will my training benefit, hurt or nothing change after eating meat.

I am a bad veggie consumer. ¬†I just don’t eat them. ¬†Fruit, I devour. ¬†Veggies, not so much.

I don’t cook. ¬†Maybe when I am in my new house I will make time to cook, but for now I eat things that are easy, ready on the fly and,¬†unfortunately, probably over processed.

I want a turkey sandwich for lunch. ¬† Or a piece of chicken and asparagus for dinner. ¬†See, nothing drastic… Not a rib-eye with a side of veal. ¬†ew. that’s nast.

And I am not saying I want to go all “Bacon for breakfast, turkey for lunch and steak for dinner.” ¬†I think I would want a mostly vegetarian diet and have an¬†occasional¬†meat product.

When I first stopped eating meat I read a lot about food. ¬†One book was Michael Pollan’s ¬†“Food Rules.” ¬†It it, he said something that is really resonating with me.

‚ÄúEat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.‚Ä̬†

That’s what I think I want. ¬†To eat whatever I want, not too much of it, and still keep a mainly vegetarian diet.

Why won’t I just do it then?!

Am I going to get sick?

                                         maybe, maybe not

Am I going to be judged and harassed?

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† I don’t know about judged but harassed? ¬†100%. ¬†I get ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†harassed now for¬†not eating meat. ¬†I would bet money that those same people who bust my balls now will be even worse if I change my eating habits.

I am and have been going back and forth for weeks now.  I am working towards a decision.  Hopefully sooner than later.

Have any of you ever been in this or a similar situation?  Any words of advice?

Slow and steady

Hello and GOOOOD morning!  I am still in my pajamas sitting outside enjoying a cup of coffee with the company of my pups.

I am BEAT. ¬†Yesterday was a long, hard day. ¬†A good day, just a long one! ¬†It started out with a 7 mile run. ¬†My pace was 8:45 and I feel good about that. ¬†I was running at a comfortable pace, not really pushing myself so I am glad it was still under a 9 minute pace. ¬†Slow and steady is so nice sometimes! ¬†My back was super sore from Friday’s CrossFit class. ¬†Once I was done I had a tough time stretching it!

I started my run at 6:15 so by the time I was done running, walking the dogs and showering it was still early ¬†so I had to wait for Jbone to wake up. ¬†I didn’t mind some quiet time outside though.

The rest of the day was spent working on the house. ¬†Painting and ripping out teeeeeny tiiiiny staples from the hardwood floor were my responsibilities. ¬†Let me tell you, that did not help my sore back! ¬†We took a midday break and went over to crossfit. ¬†The WOD was a partner workout and J and I worked today. ¬†We apparently can’t get enough of each other these days‚Ķ.HA. ¬†Tire flipping and burpees were a real treat! ¬†We then spent the rest of the day doing more house work. ¬†¬†When we were finally done we hung out for a little while before crashing hard!

I am keeping the streak up with an easy mile today.  Are you still streaking?

Hi! ¬† I hope your Friday is going just peachy. ¬†Jbone and I just got done doing a ton of work at the house. ¬†I can’t wait to move it! ¬†It will still be a little while until we are in the house but it is going to be so awesome once we are in!

I did a LOT of sweating today.  Between running, crossfit and busting my butt at the house, I am still on my mission to stay hydrated.

Water, Nuun and Amino Acid Fruit Punch

Tonight, before working on the house we celebrated a birthday. ¬†Since I suck at this whole taking pictures thing I didn’t get any shots of the birthday girl. ¬†oops. ¬†I did, however, get two other awesome Instagram pics. Have I mentioned my love for instagram?

Tomorrow I have a busy day!  HOPEFULLY a long, slow run that reminds me how much I love running, house painting, CrossFit and some more house painting!  While J enjoys a few of these….

Lemonade Beer?! AMAZING!

….I am off to pass out in clean sheets!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

Dude, are you just as happy about it being Friday as I am. ¬†I mean, ThANK THE LAWWWDY that it’s almost the weekend. ¬†Until the bell rings at the end of the day, I will continue to annoy my coworkers with way too much OAR and Dave Matthews Band. ¬†It’s Friday, I am celebrating…shhhhh. ¬†I am looking forward to lots of house work and family time this weekend!

I have a couple of rando things to share with you… First is my new favorite quote by my idol, Miss¬†Kara Goucher

‚Äé”That’s the thing about running: your greatest runs are rarely measured by racing success. They are moments in time when running allows you to see how wonderful your life is.”¬†

-Tell me that is not the most amazing, ‘hit the nail on the head’ quote you have ever heard. ¬†Life is wonderful.

Here is the link to scope out some of your fave athletes.  Who are you rooting for?

-I haven’t decided what to do about my run streak yet. ¬†This morning I ran a painful 2.5 miles. ¬†I am tired of having shitty runs and I am starting to get seriously annoyed now. ¬†I know what I need to do and my body wants to do, I just feel like such a quitter if I don’t keep streaking! ¬†Oy

I counted the comments a billion times, I hope I got it right… STACEY ¬†who “eats oatmeal every day” check your email!!!

Congrats lady and thanks to everyone who commented ūüôā

I also wanna give a shout out to Jbone’s sisters birthday! ¬†HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL! Love you!

Make it a great day!

ME and quitting

My celebration of summer yesterday was a success.  I mean, I stayed up till about 9 and got to swim.  To me, I won.

Along with swimming I did a lot of rehydrating.  I have been sweating like a beast lately and I know I am starting to get a little dehydrated so I am trying to up my water intake.

This afternoon I went to get my hair done with intentions of CHOPPING it.  well….

I wimped out.  Anddddd I only got about 3 inches taken off. Womp Womp.   It just takes too long for my hair to grow back!  Maybe next time?

While I was waiting for the color to be finished I noticed something….STRANGE

WTF is there an ass doing on my leg. ¬† That’s NOT cute, that’s all I know

I just got home for the first time (other than 10 minutes to change) since 4:15 am.  And I have another 3:30 wake up call tomorrow to get a run in before work.

Now, I am feeling a little torn about the Streak I am doing. ¬†I am starting to feel like I am not getting quality runs in. ¬†This morning I did a little over 5.5 miles and they sucked. ¬†Between running every day and going to CrossFit 3-4 times a week, I think my body is not liking it. ¬† I miss the runs where I felt strong and in shape. ¬†All week I have been having a hard time. ¬†I know I committed to the Runners World Running Streak, but I am starting to feel like maybe I should give myself a day or two off? ¬†I know it is only at least a mile a day, and really‚Ķwhat’s a mile. ¬†But I just think my legs need a break and now that I am starting to train for my fall marathon, I am going to have really long runs coming up. ¬†I’m torn‚Ķ Any suggestions?

Don’t forget‚Ķ the giveaway ends tomorrow! ¬†Thanks to all the other bloggers that helped pimp out my free swag!

Track Time

Oh Hello there!  Right now I am sitting on my back deck trying to let the pups get some fresh air and recooping from a killer CrossFit workout.

Chobani Very Berry and Vanilla protein smoothie

It is LAVA outside so I don’t think walking the dogs is a smart idea. ¬†Instead I will blog while they pant their faces off.

I have been super busy so I have a lot to catch you up on!

Last night I stayed at my parents house about an hour away from where I live.   First I got to meet miss Penny and we had an awesome backyard photo shoot.

Then I had some quality time with momma bear before we had a meeting to go to.

First we went and got our skanky runners feet taken care of. ¬†Bless those people who touch my feet, even I don’t like to sometimes!

Then it was the most nutritious dinner I have had in a while… Ice cream.  Hey, At least I got the greek frozen yogurt, that has to count for something!

After we went to a meeting for a local running club to discuss the 5K I am working on. ¬†I didn’t get very far but I am still working on it. ¬†Apparently insurance is kinda a big thing.¬†i’m an idiot and thought this would be a tad easier. Worth all the work though, it will be a for a great cause and a great guy.

REWIND to before the quality mother daughter time‚Ķ. I did speed work. ¬†At a track. ¬†and not just any old speedwork. ¬†I did Yasso 800’s. ¬†OHhHhh, what are Yasso 800’s you ask?

the end

For real though, they are one of the toughest speed workouts you can do in my opinion.

Bart Yasso is basically a running god. ¬†He works for Runners World and came up with the “Yasso 800’s.”

The workout is running 800 meters (2 laps around a track) fast. ¬†The point is to work up to 10 800’s in one workout. ¬†Here is a blurb from Bart himself that explains better than I can about what it actually is:

“I’ve been doing this particular workout for about 15 years,” he continued, “and it always seems to work for me. If I can get my 800s down to 2 minutes 50 seconds, I’m in 2:50 marathon shape. If I can get down to 2:40 (minuses), I can run a 2:40 marathon. I’m shooting for a 2:37 marathon right now, so I’m running my 800s in 2:37.”

Ideally, I want to get 10 800’s all under 3:30. ¬†It is much harder than it sounds. ¬†So, my friend and I met at the track and busted our balls. ¬†Since I have no pictures for you, I decided to show my artistic side and show you what we looked like

we are just the cutest….

We both finished 5 800’s all under 3:20 – 3:19 counts! ¬†It was tough. ¬†My ribs‚Ķyes ribs may or may not be sore today from the run. ¬†We will hopefully do this workout once a week, each week adding one more 800. ¬†I will definitely keep you posted on my progress! ¬†Oh, and I guess I will keep my BFF Bart posted too, I mean, because we¬†ARE BFF’s and all

I am off to celebrate the FIRST OFFICIAL DAY OF SUMMER by staying up way past my bedtime (might push it to 9:30, i live life on the edge) and swim a bit!

Are you celebrating the first day of summer?!  Longest day of the year too! Take advantage of it!

Don’t forget to win yourself some free stuff to! ¬†I will pick a winner Friday!

Make it a great day!

Chobani For You

I am the pickiest eater I know. ¬†That sometimes can be an issue since I don’t eat meat. ¬†My options are limited to what I can and can not eat, so I often get tired and bored of eating the same things over and over.

Well, the one thing that I just can NOT live without is yogurt. ¬†Honestly, think I would be vegan if it wasn’t for yogurt and coffee creamer. ¬†Those are two things I NEED to have.

If you have been following the blog for a while or even follow me on twitter you know I love me some Chobani.  I eat at least one every day, if not 2. Greek yogurt was something I started eating because of the amount of protein in greek vs regular yogurt.  I have tried a bunch of different brands but Cho is my all time fave!

Guess what I got on Friday from the nicest company ever?

They sent me a case of my favorite flavors and some flavors I wanted to try out.  Guess what else?!  I want to spread some ChoLove to you too!

The generous people of Chobani are letting me choose one lucky person to win an assorted case of their yogurt. ¬†choose the apple cinnamon, you can’t go wrong with that one!

All you need to do to enter is leave a comment telling me something you eat almost every day and can’t live without!

An extra entry for following me on twitter @gemruns, and one more sucker for tweeting about it! (leave seperate comments for following and tweeting)

I will pick a winner Friday through ¬†Good luck ūüôā

Family 5K

Yes, I am alive and well. ¬†I am sorry I have been MIA. ¬†You can blame Comcast. ¬†I am about to throat punch them myself, I have been having internet issues and haven’t been able to post. ¬†Blame them, not me.

Anywhoo… Busy weekend for GMR. ¬†We have a TON of stuff going on in the new house… From room colors to floor types, my head is spinning. It is all great stuff though, I swear!

After a busy day Saturday, Jbone and I met up with his brother and a few friends at a local bar for dinner and drinks. J and I, so awesomely, rocked our nasty athletic shorts and T’s to the bar. ¬†We are just too cool like that.

ShockTop Shandy? Don’t mind if I do

Father’s day was a good day for me and my family. ¬†We all met to do one of my FAVORITE things….RUNNING! ¬† We ran a local 5K that was for a fallen trooper. We had such a good time and for such a good cause.

My mom even rocked a No Limits Personal Training shirt…. For my family, I think this run was also a little bit of a dedication to our great friend who passed away recently.

And, guess who I got to lace up some running shoes?!

Like I said, Fathers day was a great day!

I will be back a little later for a little somethin’ somethin’ for ya!

Make it a great day
